One room that is always hot in summer and always cold in winter is the most commonly misdiagnosed complaint in this trade. It gets treated as an equipment problem, and it almost never is. A correctly sized air conditioner attached to a duct system that leaks a third of its air into an unconditioned attic will still fail to cool the far bedroom, and replacing that air conditioner will not change the outcome — it will just make the failure more expensive.

Airflow is measurable. Static pressure readings across the system, temperature split across the coil, and airflow at the register tell you where the air is actually going. That is a different activity from opening and closing dampers until someone stops complaining.

What gets measured

Duct diagnosis is a testing exercise, and every finding on the report traces to a reading rather than an impression.

  • Airflow at individual registers and returns
  • Return air sizing against the equipment it is feeding
  • Duct leakage at plenums, take-offs, boots and joints

Why this matters more in Maryland and Virginia than the brochure suggests

A great deal of Mid-Atlantic housing stock puts the air handler and the duct trunk in an unconditioned attic. In a Maryland August that attic runs well above outdoor temperature, so every joint that leaks is dumping cooled air into the hottest space in the building and pulling that same superheated air back in through the return side. The equipment then runs continuously, the humidity never comes down, and the upstairs bedrooms stay uncomfortable regardless of the thermostat setting. Sealing the duct is frequently a larger comfort gain than replacing the system, at a fraction of the price.

Two-storey homes on a single system

Heat rises, so a two-storey house served by one system is being asked to do two different jobs at once. Where the duct layout allows it, zoning with motorised dampers and a second thermostat resolves this properly. Where it does not, there are usually still meaningful gains available from return sizing and balancing before anyone starts pricing a second system.

Why is one room always hotter than the rest of the house?
It is usually the duct, not the equipment. The most common causes are a crushed or disconnected duct run, an undersized or blocked return, or duct leakage into an unconditioned attic. Swift Tech measures static pressure and airflow to identify which before recommending any work.
Will a bigger air conditioner fix my hot upstairs room?
Usually not, and it can make things worse. If air is not reaching the room, adding capacity does not change where the air goes. An oversized system also runs shorter cycles and removes less humidity, so the room ends up cold and clammy rather than comfortable.
Do you do duct cleaning?
Swift Tech focuses on duct repair, sealing and airflow correction rather than cleaning alone. Cleaning does not fix a leak, a crushed run or an undersized return, which are the faults that actually cause comfort complaints.
How much air can a leaky duct system lose?
Losses in the range of 20 to 30 percent of conditioned air are common in duct systems that have never been sealed, and higher where the trunk runs through an unconditioned attic. That air is paid for and never reaches a room.
